I should mention that this in no way expresses my opinion of the death penalty.  I just wanted to share the ridiculousness of this statement from Britney Spears.

In truth, wouldn’t it be great if everyone could just ‘be nice’.

Over the last three years I’ve spent in the region of £4,000 at Sainsbury’s using my Nectar Card as I go.  Just found out that makes one amazing grand total of £21.39.

THE CHROMATIC TYPEWRITER

What a lovely new use for an old gadget. Washington-based painter Tyree Callahan has modified a traditional typewriter and turned it into a painting machine, or “Chromatic Typewriter”. Callahan submitted the beautiful typewriter as part of the 2012 West Prize competition, an annual art prize that’s determined by popular vote. The keys on the vintage 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter have each been replaced with a different pad of color to give some rather interesting results!

What is Style?

We have all seen her and gawked in admiration – and not with a little envy.

She needn’t be beautiful, nor dressed in anything we couldn’t imagine for ourselves but her clothes are a brilliant orchestration of colour and texture, fabric and fit, sensibility and style. She wears them like a badge-they don’t wear her.

Her style is constant, every time you see her, her style is unmistakably her own.  Her personal style is her personal uniform.

 - Johnson Gross et al; 1995

When you are thinking about Style, consider this:

Style is not about clothes alone

Fashion can be bought-style can not

We are not always born with a sense of style –but it can be learned

Style is consistent – but not boring

What is your style?

The most important principle, in my mind, is to dress yourself according to your personality and lifestyle. This will make your life so much easier.  There is no point is dressing in a business style dress if you are a stay at home mum and vice versa.

When dressing a body bear these points in mind…..dressing yourself is like wrapping a gift and depending on the shape and size of the parcel we dress it to suit an individual’s requirement;

Colour; Texture; Pattern; Accessories;

Would you choose to flatter, disguise and personalise your gift, the same principles apply to wrapping the body.

Outer and Inner lines

Everyone has an outer line to his or her face and body. We are born with this shape. This basic shape does not change whether you are a size 8 or 28.

We must, therefore, wrap our body in clothes, hairstyles, accessories and glasses to suit and mimic our outer shape.

Matt Shaw is a fantastic addition to the Clay Salon team

I know you have all been waiting to see what this new addition to the Clay Salon team looks like.  Well, we are over the moon to present to you, Mr. Matt Shaw.

The new kid on the block is already driving a long list of clients wanting to test his skills this new environment, and we know that Matt is up for the challenge.  Previously of Monroe’s Cutting Company in Leatherhead, Matt has been headhunted by the experts at the Clay Salon for his ability to snip and style haircuts primed for the glamorous streets of London; the cobbled lanes of the home counties; or even catwalks galore!

You can book with Matt now through the Clay Salon front-of-house - but you already knew that, didn’t you!?

Can’t wait to see you ready for that new summer style very soon!  xx

Keep up the great work!

“Due to adverse weather conditions (enter business name here) has been delayed/forced to close…”.  How many times have you heard that this week!??!

Unfortunately the snow spread as far and wide as Oxshott, Surrey this week, and indeed our beloved Clay Salon staff have all been snowed in …or snowed out as the case may be.

But it seems even the forces of mother nature herself cannot stop this bunch in their creativity, as they continue to action every idea.

The photo montage above shows styling guru Kim and Salon Director JD giving one lucky young lady a revamp to the max; from long blonde to the cutest brunette bob, this is just one of their recent adventures.

The Clay Staff are well versed in the expectations of Christmas spent in a world class salon, and fully understand that the entire population of Surrey will sure enough want to be looking cut, styled and glam for the holidays.

With this in mind I’m pleased to announced that the Clay Salon will be open EVERY Monday of December!  So get your appointments booked now before it’s too late..!

I imagine some of you will be heading to far-off lands for the Christmas holidays, or maybe even before - a New York shopping trip maybe?  A break to some winter sun?  I know our very own JD is off to Dubai… but what about the effects jet-lag can have on a holiday?

At best, jet-lag means a couple of days spent feeling pretty shattered.  However, at worst, jet-lag can cause indigestion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating and headaches.  Not a great start to your ‘wonderful holiday’!!

Depending who you seek, there are varying preventative measures to stop jet-lag following you off the plane at your destination.  I’m not going to list them all, but here are my tried and tested Top Two:

Hydration is definitely in the top three - we all know drinking lost of water is great for headaches and generally keeping the system revitalized - this works in the same way for jet-lag; your body is working hard to keep things ticking while you’re sitting in a dry, pressurized aeroplane cabin, crossing numerous time-zones.  H2O will ultimately make its life easier.

Getting your sleeping patterns spot-on are another key element to staving off this unwelcome guest on your journey.  Set your clock to your destinations timezone the minute you board the plane - and adjust your sleeping patterns accordingly.  Even if this means waking-up earlier than usual the day of the flight; or staying awake for a longer period than usual at the other end; you will not regret it!

Preventing jet-lag is all about somehow keeping your body working the same as it would day-to-day, while you are sat in one place for hours; with no natural exercise.  Add to that the disorientation of crossing numerous timezones, arriving in day-light - when your body-clock thinks it’s night - and you have a recipe for disaster!

If these tips don’t work for you, then The Clay Spa has something that will.  Their specialist Jet-Lag Treatment encourages circulation and re-mobilizes body tissue while helping your digestive system keep time once again.  These three things are the key to transporting you back into the correct timezone with no strain on your already exhausted body.

I hope you have an excellent holiday and the effects are minimal.. we’re always here if you feel like that extra boost of immunity!

Ever heard of Green Peel??  Nor had I… but on my latest visit to the Clay Spa - the one where I was zoning out to incense and ambient music while Claire gave me an ‘all-time’ Indian Head Massage - I got talking to Jemma…

Jemma, is the epitome of day-spa beauty.  And, like a handbook of spa treatments, she knows the ins and outs of every service available while managing not to bore you with tech speak you’ll forget by the time you’ve changed into your spa robe.  As far as I’m concerned; if Jemma recommends a treatment, you know for sure it’ll be worth it, and most likely exactly what you need!!

But back to the Green Peel.  Excited by the prospect of me trying out every treatment at Clay, Jemma suggested the Schrammek Green Peel should be next.  A rejuvenating facial peel that will give your skin a new lease of life - literally.

I’m now signed up to try it out in December.  So you’ll be hearing more from me and this Dermatology meets Nature meets Beauty combination.  Plus, rumors are floating around the office that there will be a great introductory offer to kick Green Peel off - so watch this space!

For a natural, customizable and effective facial treatment which offers long lasting results for dry, sun damaged, wrinkly, scared, stretched or coarse skin; I’m sure Jemma would say that Green Peel is the ‘skinnovation’ for you!

The annual British Hairdressing Awards on Monday night was nothing short of a celebrity circus!  With Jonathan Ross on top form and presenting, while the fab X-Factor fella Olly Murs provided entertainment.

Among other stars like HJi’s Jayne Lewis-Orr and Mathew Bantham ;-) the Clay James’ met John Freida - one of Britain’s most accomplished hairdressers and stylists, who was filled with compliments for the Clay Salon and its team; leaving the James’ with ear to ear grins!

Next up was X-Factor supreme - Olly Murs - on top form and having a laugh about his ‘Presidential’ Suite in the hotel that night.  Parting ways with a Clay business card in hand, we have been promised a visit to the Salon by Olly soon!

With the Clay Salon and Spa’s 1st Birthday coming up very, very soon, Directors James (Salon) and Claire (Spa) decided to celebrate in style.

It’s been a whirlwind year for both; with Claire and her spa staff really pushing the limits of client satisfaction while introducing some revolutionary new treatments; and how can we forget James with his salon team taking home the British Hairdressing Business Award for longest speech …err, I mean ‘Best Salon Newcomer’!! *cough, sorry!  ;-)  What an accolade, just 9 months in!!

The invitations were sent and soon enough the champagne was flowing with some key members of the Clay Club and some people who behind the scene’s have helped with the enormous task of getting this new business off the ground.

A few leaps and bounds later and we cannot forget to true essence of what Clay is.  We would like to thank YOU most of all for your support throughout, and coming back time and again for facials, colours, manicures, blow-dry’s, massages and re-styles… whatever’s your favorite, we are beyond proud to be a part of your lifestyle!

Your Indian Head Massage

I was told prior to my appointment at the Clay Spa that, if at all possible, I should arrive in the right frame of mind for a massage of all-time..

Looking for the full Clay experience, I obeyed as any good blogger would, and got an early night in.. only to awake with a crooked neck followed by train delays due to some very windy Autumnal weather.  I persisted with a calm attitude and managed to arrive for my appointment, walking almost upright and only 10 minutes late!

On arrival however, I realised that none of this mattered.  I sunk into one of the huge spa waiting room sofa’s - the incense already filling my nostrils to begin the well trialed process of alleviating any remnants of stress I felt - I waited for Claire to be summoned.

Invited to my treatment room, I could just as easily have been back in an Indonesia retreat; the room and treatment bed preheated to relax and sooth the muscles before the massage has even begun with ambient music, careful aromas and mood lighting all perfectly set to drift off to.  I honestly couldn’t fault the Spa’s set-up; and the massage followed suit.

As hands got to work kneading my shoulders; acupressure techniques expertly found specific points on my neck, scalp and face - used to better circulation and re-balance the bodies energy fields.  All the while I was gradually beginning to zone out, losing track of where I was and sinking into a world of ultimate calm.

Eventually I was asked to flip onto my stomach and welcomed by a steaming bowl of Rose Renew aromatherapy oil.  The scent heightened my feeling of calm and the deep massage continued with forearms pressing firmly on my upper-back and shoulders. Once again those all important pressure points were put to good use and I was soon back to drifting.

I made the most of the Spa’s impeccable facilities; stepping into their rain shower - every towel feeling brand new!  Post-massage, I took a seat in the Clay Members Coffee Lounge, with a jug of water to hand - to help expel noxious toxins trying to escape.  The floating feeling continued for a good hour, in which I quickly realised it was unlikely I was going to get any work done!  Yet to my surprise - this soon shifted into a feeling of high ‘conquer-all’ energy which continued into the following day.

I can confidently recommend this type of therapy to anyone, as it can only improve your bodies output.  If you need a good excuse.. the way I see it our bodies need a good energizing once in a while as this can only improve day-to-day productivity… and trust me, this REALLY works!

xx

Allergy Anarchy

I came across this video via @GOOD.  It started off giving an interesting insight into the processes of cheese making, but with a twist not halfway through, the quote

“Cheese is a superfood

distracted me like a knife scraping on metal.

I beg to differ.  I agree, cheese is full of protein but, it is also one of the most digestively intolerable substances humans are faced with day-in, day-out; and often the cause of symptoms from common colds and flu to eczema and dermatitis to name a few.

I would love to hear an official allergy and food intolerance specialists opinion.  And despite this minor speed-bump, I will continue to enjoy the Blogs and Video’s www.good.is bring me on a dairy *cough*…I mean DAILY basis.  ;-)

nephrolithiasis:

A physician owns a laboratory in addition to his office and refers you for blood work there. Is this ethical? How about a large regional hospital that refers within itself? Or a surgeon who thinks you need a surgery and does it himself? Isn’t this the concept of a medical home?

Of course there is the potential for unnecessary procedures or lab tests, but at a point we have to trust our professionals’ clinical judgment.

Regardless the ultimate goal is continuity of care and accessibility. The argument against is a a concern for collusion to artificially increase costs. The solution then is price transparency… or what we have now: A redundant system of a profit sucking insurance industry (that claims to control cost by denying care) in addition to anti-trust regulatory oversight that can’t make its mind up regarding ACO policy (see below). Time for health care to simplify.

jayparkinsonmd:

Part of Obamacare is this concept called Accountable Care Ogranizations:

An ACO is a network of doctors and hospitals that shares responsibility for providing care to patients. In the new law, an ACO would agree to manage all of the health care needs of a minimum of 5,000 Medicare beneficiaries for at least three years.

The goal of these is to essentially get a dedicated group of healthcare providers in a given area to work together and deliver care to a group of people for a fixed cost, ultimately driving down the cost of care.

However, for the past few decades the federal government has been slowly and steadily making this kind of activity illegal due to anti-trust laws. The issue being that there were doctors and hospital groups in a local area getting so large that they were only referring to each other and therefore generating revenue only for themselves and artificially increasing costs.

But now the government has made an about face and is actually encouraging this kind of activity. The feds are even fighting internally to decide who gets to investigate the anti-trust concerns.

A day in the life of a Food Intolerant.

Well, it’s not that bad actually.  The 20 (approx.) jabs I had for testing really didn’t hurt in the slightest and it allows you to really get to know and understand a whole variety of specific details about your body and how it reacts to certain foods AND …metals?

That’s right, I had a (separate) blood test a few days ago and the results are in.  Food intolerance/sensitivity is not always just about the food!  Many people are also sensitive to metals and chemicals.  One of the most common items on the periodic table (you know, that chart we left back in Chemistry class) that people react to is Mercury.  Used widely in the past - tooth fillings for example - now, the effects are being seen.

In my case, Chromium (VI) is the main cause for concern thus far …found in Stainless Steel, Wood Preserver, and Fabric Dyes; Chromium VI is rather toxic if you come across it in it’s base form - (but don’t worry otherwise).  I’m yet to really discover what my reaction is however, I hoping with a few adjustments and an extra supplement to counteract it, some of these longer-term injuries might start healing a bit quicker.

Interesting times ahead… we’ll keep you posted…

In the latest issue of Healthy Magazine - available at any Holland & Barrett - you will find my classifieds ad promoting my soon to be launched Smart Phone application…

I’m very pleased with the magazine itself; it has a special piece of editorial about beating food allergies which obviously ties in very well with the app.  Furthermore, I hope you’ll agree that any magazine with Supermodel Gisele on the front promoting holistic therapies has got to be good!!

Alternative Therapies are often met with a skeptics eye.  New to our modern world, yet practiced for centuries by our ancestors; many of these alternatives are the last healing hope we have.

Reiki is one of those therapies where a certain science has to be believed to be fully understood.  The term ‘Rei-Ki’ literally means “Universal Life Energy” and it is the focus of this energy by the practicing Reiki Master that results in healing.

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I was once skeptical of this particular healing method, and although I considered many other alternative (or environmental) medicine techniques a part of my day-to-day life, Reiki still seemed a little far fetched…

On a months trip to the Outer Hebrides however, while following my no.1 passion in life.. I found myself living with a Reiki Master and her Blacksmith husband.  On return to my bedsit with an indescribable pain in my right knee - the consequence of falling from the top of a 15ft North Atlantic swell, a Reiki session was kindly offered to me.

It’s difficult to describe an energy you can feel but cannot see; and yet, I know the improvement in pain that allowed me to get back in the water a few days later.  The same is true of a 70 year old gent who I met on his weekly visit to said Reiki Master - “it’s difficult to describe exactly where the intense heat comes from, but without it I have trouble getting out of bed.”

There is no limit to Reiki at either end of the scale - which would be part of the reason it is branded ‘alternative’.  The truth is, ‘alternative’ is a term given to something that has not yet broken the mass market - just like ‘alternative’ music; it’s not Pop.. but that’s not to say it’s not popular.

Try it for yourself and make your own decision; you might just be surprised at its benefits.  Eve is The Clay Spa’s in-house Holistic Therapist and she’ll be more than happy to explain things with more authority if you so wish…

Have fun for now,

Have you ever heard of the Ripple Effect?

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is another form of alternative psychotherapy from the same realm as hypnotherapy and tied in nicely with acupuncture.

Sufferers of depression, panic attacks and other cognitive behavior conditions often feel like there is no way out.  Once a pebble has been dropped into their mind-pool, the ripple effect can take hold and in some more severe cases, what was once a simple problem can become a life-threatening issue.

Taking on-board traditional acupuncture pressure points while asking the patient to focus on a specific traumatic memory - albeit while in a state of calm; the therapist looks to free the bodies energy field and reteach it with balance.

This form of treatment has been widely accepted by famous TV Hypnotherapists and has even had coverage on shows as popular as Richard and Judy.

These traumatic disorders are not to be taken lightly and I know the specialist at The Clay Spa would be happy to talk you through it in even more detail.  EFT often works where all else has failed and with a 90% success rate, EFT could be the savior you are looking for.

The ripple effect could be no more.

For A Healthier Humanity?

It has been pointed out to me on more than one occasion that I sometimes give General Practitioners (GP’s) a bit of a raw deal; you may even have noticed yourself.  Although I’m not here to make friends, I do feel like I have drifted slightly from the ‘objective view’ that I personally try to sustain.

I uphold my opinion that symptom-treating prescription drugs are not kind to our fragile human bodies; as with the fact that many of them - processes and products included - are harmful to our fragile planet.  However, when I found THIS ARTICLE, I could only empathize with their open-minded attitude and passion to help others no matter where the help came from.

I should point out that there is no issue with GP’s; their cause is just and by following that profession alone, they are doing more for the world than many of us can dream of.  I guess the problem arises when pharmaceuticals get involved.  These money-hungry corporations hiding under a charitable/help-all persona… I wish they would let our GP’s think for themselves; from their very first day of university to their very last day as the head of staff in the countries largest hospitals!  Then we’d see a world working towards a healthy humanity!

The world is changing.

The world HAS changed.

I have been wondering for some time now when or indeed if ‘Alternative’ medicine will ever be the norm.  How can it?  When even the professionals within this very specialised industry continue to call it by the name ‘Alternative’?

The fact is, we - the majority - have already moved on from our own recognition of ‘Alternative’.

The World Health Organisation (http://www.who.int/en/) estimates that around 75% of the world’s 6.6 billion person population already rely on traditional (alternative) medicines as their primary form of health care.  This is a staggering majority.

Alternative medicine is not only in our minds, we can find it on the high street - most now boast a Holland & Barrett or other health food store of the like; in book stores - Amazon claiming well over 20,000 search results for Alternative Medicine and Therapies; and now even iPhone apps!  Do the maths and you too will realise how important our ‘Alternative’ Medicines and Therapies are.

Forget the name; Alternative is the new cool.  It works; it’s been proven by the majority; and it’s here to stay.

Diagnosis Disorder?

I stumbled upon this article while doing some research for an Organic client of mine… the simple fact that a person enjoys eating healthily, or even living healthily sure cannot be reason enough to diagnose a ‘Healthy Eating Disorder’?  Apparently, the correct name for this “disease” is orthorexia nervousa – Latin for “nervous about correct eating.”

I mean c’mon!  Surely these ‘academics’ have better things to do with their time than make up new mental health issues as reasons to prescribe more and more drugs - filling our bodies with ‘symptom-masking’ chemicals!?  In their defense though, maybe they have seen a decline in patient activity over recent years?  …maybe people just aren’t as mental as 2009?  …and maybe these psychiatrists are now facing unemployment?

Think about it… Since the wider market is now a lot more conscious of its eating habits than previously (5% of the Global population rather than 3% last year!); with McDonalds going ‘green’ and the ‘Free-From’ section of supermarkets growing by the day; maybe there are actually LESS mental disorders around to treat…?  I have been hearing and reading about the effects foods and chemicals can have on a persons emotional stability; including high-scale depression…  ‘So yes, it’s about time the healthy eaters of this world were called mental’ …REALLY??

When is the world going to wake up and hear what they’re saying?!

I was watching the GB (Silverstone) stop of the Moto GP last weekend as I occasionally do and was surprised to hear that Ducati rider Casey Stoner had been missing quite a few races of the tour due to his Lactose Intolerance!

This is not exactly a “Eureka!” moment in the world of allergies and food intolerance however, I think it is a good example of how food intolerance is an evident in so many people lives.  It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do for a living, or to some extent where you live.  Stop and think.  If your body is not allowing you to live the life you want… could food intolerance be partly to blame?

I know from first-hand experience that Food Intolerance can effect everything from Energy Levels to sore knees; stuffy nose to migraines; minor depression to a slow recovery.  Many General Practitioners have not yet grasped the concept of ‘you are what you eat’ and will prescribe an endless amount of prescription drugs to try and keep your body afloat.  - These GP’s were not taught Food Intolerance in their 6 years of University so to them, Food Intolerance as good as ‘does not exist’!

It is down to YOU to question your own body and discover why you feel the way you do.  There IS a reason behind it; you’re body is telling you something is wrong - so why mask this symptom with more pill pushing rather than finding and treating the cause behind it?

Casey Stoner has since adjusted his diet and has made enough of a recovery to get back on his bike.  There are plenty of other celebs that have done the same, and furthermore; millions of ordinary people who looked at their health with a clear head.  They changed their own lives without drugs and I’m sure you could to.

With you in mind,

Al.An

Through my research of ‘allergies and food intolerance in the media’ for a side project (and my own personal interest); I have been noticing more and more mentions of food intolerance in places that one would not instantly associate with regular food intolerance.  The Middle East for instance - where for decades flour and wheat based products have been such a prominent part of every staple diet - reports of food intolerance are increasing dramatically.

In this Gulf News article, Dr Al Babbili, Managing Director of one UAE based Food Intolerance test lab, gives a prime example of the current global attitude of symptom based treatment and suggests this needs to change to a ‘cause orientated’ approach to actually cure patients… rather than just make them feel better for a day of two.

I am very pleased to see such wise thoughts coming from the Gulf, and I am sure that as knowledge and understanding of food intolerance grows, their input will be at the front of the line.

The above link is an article that sums up the history of suppression within medicine.

In the last 100 years, freedom of speech has changed the way we live, and changed the ambitions we strive for.  Freedom of speech is one thing but, how can you know what to speak about if the root of the suppression begins with how we are educated and the knowledge we receive?

To have an objective view is to understand all aspects of an argument or situation.  To have an objective view allows us to make decisions and come to the conclusions we feel apply best to those circumstances.  These conclusions may not be the same conclusions as even our best friend but, it does not mean they are wrong.

Environmental medicine has been simmering away, growing with each day and improving the lives of millions of people who searched hard for that knowledge widely suppressed by pharmaceutical fat-cats and their government servants.  Free Speech about Science, has the ability to change the way environmental medicine is view by the public; and with a change in public opinions, comes a change in government policies; and eventually national health systems.

The process is long but, the benefits are infinite.  We deserve the knowledge to make objective opinions within science, health and medicine.

I recently interviewed Helen Olphin and her son Joshua, who was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 8. After years of GP’s prescribing Ritalin and other forms of suppressants, mum, Helen, knew that these drugs were the wrong way forward for her son to lead the life they all wanted. So, she began looking into other forms of treatment.

Eventually finding Dr. Econs of AllergyMedicalUK.com, Joshua’s life was changed, allowing him to concentrate better at school, organise his extracurricular time and still eat a large variety of foods so as not to affect his day to day life.

The Olphin’s continue to see Dr. Econs for other issues such as Hayfever.

An excellent little article about the use of improper food combination’s causing digestive discomfort and the how and why to Organic food being rarely actually Organic anymore!

The first in a series of interviews with Environmental Medicine specialist Dr. A Econs MRCS LRCP. On the topic of Food Intolerance Dr. Econs gives some interesting insights into western diets and the way we treat our foods. More podcasts from the Superdoc to follow shortly.. TOGETHER…

The world needs to change.

The Public, Our Governments, General Practitioners, The National Health Service…  looking outside of the confined box we live in; there is a wealth of health knowledge out there; and this is the beginning.
